David and I met in the way all ideal clients and service providers connect. Through an exclusive, highly pursued round table in which only the best of the best are invited to join based on their merits and achievements.

Otherwise known as… a local Facebook group LOL.

I was tagged in David’s post requesting recommendations for a copywriter (thanks friends!) and we started talking about his upcoming projects.

He had tried working with other copywriters to get things going, but things weren’t clicking as he’d hoped from a service and writing perspective.

I was happy to jump in, listen to his needs, and take him through my process.

The project: Update website with strategic sales copy, finish sales deck, and complete case studies of featured clients

We started with the ICON Assessment so I could learn more about David and his company. While our focus was on Web Publisher PRO, it was amazing to learn about his other business ventures and how he’s growing multiple companies to serve a variety of sectors.

As part of my process, I also created WPP-branded Typeform surveys (known affectionately as the Only Good Gossip-Grabber) for David to send his clients to capture their feedback for website testimonials and content for case studies.

On our strategy call we talked through how he and his team serve their clients, mostly media and publishing companies, and how he’s gotten most of his business through cold calling.

He had a website for WPP as a credibility filter, but there wasn’t much content there to move prospects to reach out.

Through talking with David, I could easily see how he’s built so many successful businesses. He’s a listener, problem solver, and down to earth human that knows his clients and follows through with years of experience, the skillset, and team behind him to get things done.

When we received the feedback from his clients, they all confirmed that he and his team stood out by being responsive and quick to fix things.

So good to hear!!

After gathering all of this, I worked on a Messaging Guide to pull out top themes and headlines we could use to speak to his clients on the new website.

We agreed on highlighting their reliability, and I got to work on the website copy, sales deck, and case studies. We worked in tandem through the review process to get things over to WPP’s design team quickly so the website could launch on schedule.

And they were fast, too! After just a few weeks WPP revealed their beautiful new website with targeted messaging to connect and move the right prospects through the pipeline.

Why I loved this project

In corporate branding, there are three things you need for a seamless and tight rebrand… 1) Great communication, 2) Responsive clients, and 3) Focused feedback. David provided all three by taking the lead on being involved in this process.

Some founders delegate involvement to another team member, and while that can work sometimes, it usually ends up like a game of telephone and a hefty review process. Because of his relationship with his clients, it was also great to get their feedback so we could write to future prospects in their own words!

While it’s possible to get decent messaging just from “inside the company” — great copy comes from voice of customer research, so I loved that they were able to inform us on what makes WPP different than the competitors they could’ve worked with instead.

In the end, this project was super fun and challenged me to step outside of personal branding and into the big leagues with WPP.
